5 Ways to Educate Our Kids for the Future

date_rangeMay 02, 2020

Earlier, it was an invention that made the world go around. Today though, the beacon has gotten rechristened to ‘innovation.’ It’s difficult to overlook the fact that innovation has become a phenomenon that has emerged to be the driver of the world and its economy now.

This scenario has, as a result, created a demand for innovative thinkers across all industries. To meet this new industrial requirement, there is mounting pressure on education systems, educators and students. For teachers and professors, their challenge is to induct new courses and programs with newly-styled teaching and training formats. On the other hand, children are faced with a dilemma about what field of learning they must go into so that their career prospects can get enriched in the future. To answer the above, we have compiled a list wherein we highlight the 5 must-dos/must-haves when it comes to educating kids for the future.

Coding for Kids: Research in recent years has proven that programmers are poised to be the go-to people in the future. Be it Python, Java, etc – all kinds of programming languages are in vogue now – more than ever! The reason being, for innovation to happen, a program needs to be created that will trigger particular functions in an innovative device or medium. And to develop the aforesaid program, an algorithm is required.  And programmers are experts for the same. Long story short, the future belongs to kids who will grow up with knowledge and awareness of programming and coding. Owing to the growing demand for programmers and coders in world industries, it has paved the way for newer sectors to emerge – Data Science, for example. How data has become a prized commodity in the technology age, there is no telling how enormous the data science domain will grow in the coming years. Given the multi-faceted uses of data, and how data has become one of the drivers of innovation, educators in schools, colleges and institutes have put their thinking hats on to come up with kid-friendly coding courses and programs.

At the Coding Elements institute, we have the tailor-made Coding for Kids course aimed at learners who are between ages 6 and 10 years. The short-term course allows budding coding kids to build an impressive website using Javascript. We will cover the full-stack. What’s more, kids don’t need to have any prior experience in coding to be considered eligible for the course. So long as kids are passionate about learning how to code, trust our teachers to do the rest.

Harnessing the Four ‘Cs’: To ensure that our kids are well-equipped to tackle the opportunities and challenges of the future, it is important and necessary that parents and educators provide them environments wherein their four C’s can be nurtured. The four C’s have been identified as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. These are basic foundational qualities that are otherwise known as soft skills. They have come into prominence because the age of innovation relies greatly on the 4 Cs.

When educators and parents immerse the kids in a learning milieu, it is important to ensure that the courses and tools that are being used support the kids’ growth as a critical thinker, enable them to discover and realize the benefits of working together (collaboration) through continuous dialogue (communication) so that level of innovation (creativity) becomes enhanced, and thereby the delivery of the end-product is at par with the expectations.

Developing a learning environment of this kind will allow the kids to get trained in enforcing the 4 Cs in all their endeavors henceforth. By the time they become career-ready, their 4 Cs act as their guiding light when it comes to making important choices.

Encourage Kids to be Well-Informed: We cannot stress enough on the importance of kids having a high degree of self-awareness as well as being in the loop about the world around them. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the parents and teachers to make sure that the kids are made to realize the potential and usefulness of the Internet as an information tool and reservoir. As the kids engage in learning new courses and subjects, they should also be taught and mentored about how to use the Internet to learn the latest trends and developments that are unraveling in their fields of interest and beyond. The reason why being well-informed in a requisite in today’s times is that it enables kids to be in the habit of being interested in the world and all that’s happening in it.

Focus on Building Strong Work Ethics:

While parents and teachers must admire and appreciate kids’ IQ and what they do at home and in class, it is also very significant that they push the kids to challenge themselves, and not just rest on the laurels they may have earned. Insisting to kids that they look for the next opportunity or challenge to overcome, it will build their self-confidence and prepare them to become good at adapting to the world changes around them.
